I’m in recovery, getting healthier, now what?
The concept behind Recovery Adventure Tours grew organically out of my personal recovery experiences. I was introduced to recovery in 2000 after my family (and the DEA) thought it would be a good idea for me to go to rehab. I joined a 12 Step program, stayed sober and subsequently returned to graduate school to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and addiction specialist. I’ve worked in every facet of addiction treatment from primary to residential to long-term settings. I’m a trained interventionist, have a wonderful private practice, and run Medication Assisted Recovery Centers (MARC) around New Orleans, LA. But I still want more from my recovery!
In the Fall of 2017, I took a three month sabbatical and traveled throughout Southeast Asia. It was there that my recovery was thrust into another level. I studied scuba diving and it completely blew my mind. I rode motorcycles in the mountains of northern Thailand where I stumbled upon a Buddhist teaching monastery and studied there for a week. I sat quietly gazing on the most beautiful sunsets I’ve ever seen. In short, I found activities which were mindfulness in practice. I had finally found the state of presence and connection to the now which I have sought through yoga, prayer and meditation. I was also filled with the desire to share these types of moments with others in recovery. That desire became Recovery Adventure Tours!
